The winter season is a time of many holidays, and many students wish to communicate their well wishes to family, friends, and even strangers during this time.
There is a dilemma, however, that arises, the question of how to communicate these well wishes. What phrase is most suitable: “Happy Holidays” or “Merry Christmas”?
For Alexa McMahon, junior, being Jewish has brought about an increased awareness in the area of well-wishing.
“I think you should say “Happy Holidays” because it considers all religions. Not everyone celebrates Christmas, and by just saying “Merry Christmas” you’re assuming everyone follows the same religion—and they don’t. You should embrace differences, not ignore them by acting like everyone is the same.”
McMahon believes that since Leesville is not a solely Christian school, “Merry Christmas”, has the potential to offend those of differing religious traditions.
“I know people aren’t trying to offend others by saying “Merry Christmas” but they act like Christianity is the only religion, and I feel like that is just ignorant.”
Christian Klute on the other hand, says,” I believe that people should say whatever they desire, whether it is “Merry Christmas”, “Happy Hanukah”, “Happy Kwanzaa”, or “Happy Holidays”. Personally, I don’t think that you should say something just to be politically correct. As long as you speak without malice, I do not see any harm in saying “Merry Christmas” instead of “Happy Holidays”.”
Klute has no problem saying, “Merry Christmas”, and he is not afraid to display this, even in public.
“When I am out and about, I typically say “Merry Christmas” to people, and they seem to light up with joy. In my experience, it seems like people try not to say “Merry Christmas” because they are afraid they might offend someone, but I don’t think you should forfeit the Christmas season to be politically correct.”
Whether one agrees with Klute or McMahon remains a matter of preference, the true lesson learned, is that one should always be considerate. Winter is a time in which one hears a chorus of different holiday wishes, and no matter what they are, acknowledgement is the best one can do.
Whatever personal preference leads you to say, being mature and respectful of other cultures will suffice. Happy Holidays. Merry Christmas. And a Happy New Year.
