The Leesville Varsity men’s basketball team entered winter break with a disappointing 4-7 record. The team continued to practice early during the break to prepare for the annual holiday tournament in Lee County.

After winning the first three games of the season the team began slipping downhill losing its next seven bringing the record to 3-7.

Troy Williamson, junior, believes that the lack of boxing out and not getting back on defense, allowing the other team easy fast break points led to their downfall.  “We easily could have won some of those games,” said Williamson, but the Pride fell short in several games.

Coach Brewington was pleased with the first half of the season regardless of the record. “With many first time varsity players, everyone was working hard and learning fast,” said Brewington

Leesville squared off against Wakefield at home for the last game in 2009 on Dec. 17. The fans encouragement and tough play led the Pride to defeat Wakefield 39-38 in a nail biter giving the Wolverines their first loss in the conference. It was a great way to end the first half of the season and would give the team momentum going into the tournament.

The Christmas tournament in Lee County began on Dec. 28, and the Pride would go 2-1 tournament, losing big to Union Pond 68-44, but then defeating South Granville and Cary.

The Pride would finish in a disappointing fifth place. “Looking back at the other teams playing we were not the fifth best team, we easily were the second or third best,” said Brewington.

The team came back from break right into the heart of conference play. In order for the team to keep their momentum, they need to come together as a team allowing them to play more consistently. “Our defense is definitely getting better but we need to sharpen up of offence,” said Brewington

When asked how the team will prepare for the tough schedule ahead Williamson said, “We need to watch film from previous games and fix wrong points from the past.”

The team will need to mature fast in order to win games and make it into the state playoffs.
