During its time on Broadway, Hairspray was seen by more than 3.4 million people. In April, however, the musical will be presented live on the Leesville auditorium stage for the school and community to enjoy.

From Thursday, April 18, through Saturday, April 20, Leesville Theater will present their 2013 production of Hairspray.

With the countdown towards that weekend approaching its final month, work on the musical is moving along smoothly and swiftly.

“We’re starting to get to the point where everything is coming together,” said Matt Cesari, junior, who plays the starring role of Link Larkin in the play. “We’re putting together the acting, songs and choreography [now],” he said.

In the musical, set in 1950’s Baltimore, Larkin (played by Zac Efron in the 2007 movie) is the attractive, stereotypical Broadway teen jock. He and girlfriend Amber Von Tussle star in a popular local TV show until likeable protagonist Tracy Turnblad — played by Leesville’s Prissila Block, junior — steals him away at the end.

Hairspray is undeniably cheesy, but it explores a number of serious issues, such as civil rights, psychological disorders and self-esteem issues, in an entertaining, engaging way. The musical also works well for Leesville’s large cast and dynamic stage-setting capabilities.

“The cast is very supportive,” said Cesari, “[and] it’s fun to see people grow into their character.”

“It’s not like a competition. We all want each other to do well.”
