Three students from Leesville Road High School were accepted into the North Carolina School of Science and Math. The school is residential, and based out of Durham.

Abbott Gaddy, Yesle Hahn, and Ellie Taylor are the three students from Leesville who were lucky enough to be accepted into the North Carolina School of Math and Science (NCSSM).

NCSSM is a residential school in Durham, North Carolina. The school has been in the top 100 public high schools in the country for the past 14 years. It’s known for its focus and specialty in Science, Math, and Technology. Additionally, NCSSM is a part of the UNC system, and is tuition free.

Students who wish to attend the school must apply as sophomores, and each student must submit their SAT scores. Because there are so few spots available, the application process is very competitive.

“The application process is long. It requires you to take the [SAT], write about 10 short essays, and take a math test on the day of open house,” said Gaddy.

Taylor wants to attend NCSSM for the broad range of classes that will be available for her to take.

“There are a lot of  cool math classes and then there’s a great humanities department… All of the classes that they have [are] just really cool. I was looking at the class list last night and they have immunology and developmental biology and…all of these really cool things” said Taylor.

Students who choose to attend will start in the 2015-2016 school year.  For more information on the NCSSM, you can visit their website.
