The battle of the flat-irons
My hair straightener is dead. The Remington Wet2Straight I received in eighth grade has survived through five years of daily use. By sophomore year, I had my routine down to a science, turning the curly lion’s mane I wake up with into perfectly straight hair in less that ten minutes. The Wet2Straight heated up in [...]
Microsoft teams up with Leesville to pilot new program
On the first day of American Education Week, Nov. 15, Microsoft and the Department of Public instruction announced the implementation of the largest IT Academy in the world across the state of North Carolina, the first state to provide it to all public high schools. June Atkinson, State Superintendent of Public Education, said in a [...]
Rocky Horror: Scandalous fun!
I recently wrote that Alex Stewart, senior, and I were Rocky Horror virgins, nervous and excited to go to our first ever showing of the play. However, that is no longer the case. On Oct. 29, we experienced Rocky Horror firsthand. Dressed in French maid costumes from Party City in a not-so-accurate representation of Magenta, [...]
Schachle raps with school spirit
Brendan Schachle, senior, recently posted a rap he wrote and recorded on his Facebook page, prompting many “Likes” and comments from Leesville students and graduates alike. The rap, entitled “GREEN AND BLUE (Black and Gold Remix),” is about the LRHS football team and showing school spirit. It took Schachle only two days to go from [...]
Teachers rate their students
Most people have heard of the website, ratemyteacher.com, where students can post comments and numerically rate their teachers on their personalities and teaching styles. I recently gave Leesville teachers the opportunity to rate their students – not individuals, but what makes a good student or classroom in general. I was surprised to learn what teachers [...]
What every Rocky Horror virgin needs to know
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is coming to Raleigh Memorial Auditorium from October 28-31. Having heard of this cult classic before, my friends and I are dying to finally see the show for ourselves. However, the following that this show has makes going for the first time incredibly intimidating. The audience dresses up, acts out [...]
Leesville students enjoy State Fair traditions
The State Fair arrived in North Carolina lon October 14, and many Leesville students are excited about trying new foods and rides and continuing past traditions. The general consensus is that the greasy, fried food that is only available ten days a year is by far the best part of the State Fair. Students’ faces [...]
Sun Chips’ bags are loud, get over it
Sun Chips has stopped making the first ever 100% biodegradable chip bag because some people think it crinkles too loudly. The bags were made out of plant-based materials and were able to completely compost in 12-16 weeks. Before the creation of Sun Chips’ new packaging, chip bags were destined to spend eternity in a land [...]
Ratemyteacher.com biased but entertaining
Ratemyteacher.com is a website that allows students to anonymously post comments and rate their teachers. Leesville Road High School has 132 teachers listed on the website, with 858 ratings total. Students evaluate their teachers on a scale of one (Bad) to five (Great) in easiness, helpfulness, clarity and popularity, and these numbers are averaged to [...]
Grill Team leaders face challenges
Jason Holtman, Kyle Holtman and Andrea Gonzalez, seniors, are experiencing the challenges, changes and pride that leading the 2011 Grill Team brings. The three leaders, carrying on the tradition that started with the class of 2008, faced difficulties as they worked to get this year’s Grill Team off and running. “We actually though it wasn’t [...]
Sherry Frost Involvement Scholarship
Everyone involved with Leesville Road High School depends on Sherry Frost. Her daily emails keep parents and students updated on what is happening at the school. A woman who does so much and devotes so much time to helping the school deserves some recognition – which Leesville did when they named the Sherry Frost Involvement [...]
Tips for rising college freshmen
As seniors move toward graduation and beginning the next chapter in their lives, many are starting college in the fall. Although they have learned the ins and outs of high school during their four years at Leesville, college will be a new and exciting experience. In order to make the transition from high school to [...]
Awards Day Reminder
Standing in front of the class, Dubay announced that he had an award for every person in the class. These were not the silly superlatives that many teachers hand out so that every student gets an award. Instead, Dubay offered valuable advice to his students, reminding each one that he or she will make a difference in the world – some by possibly curing cancer, and others by being a good friend or spouse.
“The Mermaid Chair” a light read
The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kid tells the story of Jessie Sullivan, a middle-aged woman who reexamines her life and twenty-year marriage after a tragedy forces her to travel back to the island where she grew up. After meeting and falling in love with a Benedictine monk, Jessie must make a decision between the [...]
Spring Break: Good time for college visits
Although most high school students think of Spring Break as a time for beaches and relaxation, many Leesville juniors took advantage of a long break from school to make college visits. Some students took guided tours, others sat in on college classes, and some just wandered the campuses of the schools they were most interested [...]
