Leesville, Fuqua Finish Golf Season

The Leesville women’s golf team successfully completed their 2009 golf season.

Coach Andy Hunt thought the team could have finished a little stronger.  “We felt like we should have played better at regionals to compete as a team [at states].”

Regardless, Hunt was fairly pleased with his team.  “I think we were happy with how the conference wrapped up.”

Led by Kaity Fuqua, senior, the team battled all season and finished second in the Cap 7.

“[The season] went well.  The team did a lot better than last year; we finished fourth last year,” said Fuqua.

Allison Mossinghoff, sophomore, learned much from the season.  “I felt like I had a whole lot of fun; I got a lot out of it, and I definitely improved from last year.”

The team competed in the 4A Eastern Regional Qualifiers at the Chapel Ridge Golf Club on October 20 and finished ninth overall.  Fuqua shot a team best 91 to qualify for the 4A NCHSAA Women’s State Golf Championship on October 26 and 27.

Fuqua shot a total 188 after two rounds at the Fox Fire Resort and Golf Club at Fox Fire Village, NC.  “I was sick, so I didn’t play as well as I did in conference matches.  I couldn’t make any putts.”

Hunt agreed with Fuqua.  “Kaity had a tough couple of days.  She didn’t play as well as everyone anticipated.”

Still, Hunt carries high expectations for next season.  “Next year we should finish at about the same spot.”

The rest of the team looks forward to improving for next year.  “Hopefully I can keep progressing,” said Mossinghoff.  “Obviously no one can replace Kaity.  That’s going to be a big loss because she was an amazing golfer.  But I hope there will be some incoming freshman who can fill her spot.”

As for Fuqua herself: “I might walk on at a private school.”
