After a disappointing third place finish in the Cap 7 conference last season, the Leesville Road High School Men’s Golf team is determined to rebound and win states in 2010.
This year’s team consists of strong returning veterans that include Grayson Murray, sophomore and 17th ranked high school golfer in the nation, Nick Wheeler, senior, Michael deMontbrun, junior, and Larry Han, sophomore. In addition, incoming freshmen Carter Jenkins and Zach Seabolt add a much appreciated boost for the club.
Murray, who recently committed to Wake Forest, believes the team will definitely do better than they did last year. “I hope as an individual be the best player in the conference and as a team win states this season.”
The team started off the season on Friday, March 5 with a commanding victory. The Pride golfers shot lower than 19 other teams did at the Keith Hills High School Invitational, a field which included the defending state champions of both public and private school associations.
“I came in second as an individual. We definitely have potential; we have four really good players, and I think we can go far.”
The team has certainly improved much from last season; deMontbrun believes the extra skill and talent of this year’s club will have what it takes to win the state championship this season.
“We all have the ability to shoot very low,” said deMontbrun, “but we just need to pull it all together and we’ll be unstoppable.”
The team’s next match will be on Tuesday, March 9 at Hedingham Country Club.
I think math competitions are amazing.
