On Monday, October 17, the Leesville varsity men’s soccer team defeated Heritage High 1-0 on senior night.
Monjue Campbell, senior, said, “It was a great way to go out.”
Throughout the first half, the team could not put the ball in the back of the net, but they were able to get the job done in the second half when Fernando Castellanos, senior, scored.
Coach Dinkenor was convinced the team had the game in hand. “We never were in a lot of danger. We should have put the game away in the first ten minutes.”
The fact that this could be their last time playing at home weighed heavily on the seniors’ minds.
Faelan Hoese, a senior, said, “Leaving the field on Senior Night with a win is great. I always have so much fun playing soccer at Leesville. But I get a little sad as I watch our senior season come to a close.”
The Pride relied heavily on their seniors’ experience this season. Simon Burke, junior, said, “The seniors made up a lot of our team this year; we couldn’t have won our games without them.”
The varsity team has the potential to go far in both the CAP 8 and state tournaments. Dinkenor said, “With consistency in goal, more relentless defense, more precision passing in the midfield and a far higher conversion of chances into goals, we will progress game to game with success.”
