Pride wrestling finished a successful regular season, by placing second in the Cap 8 championships on Wednesday, Feb. 8. The team then moved ahead to the regional championship on Feb. 17 and 18.

“We were a young team; we went further than we were expected to. Our success at the Cap 8 was due to our talented freshmen,” said CJ Kimmerly, junior captain.

The team outdid themselves in the conference championships and are proud of their success.

However, Jason Wyss, coach, said, “We fell short on our season goals, but we always want to be conference champs. But, we took away many positives from it.”

As a whole, the team grew close together through their success. Zach Cates, senior captain, “We work more as a team, whereas last year we were very divided.”

The teamwork of the Pride wrestling is a part of their accomplishments. Wyss said, “The guys are peaking at the right time in the season.” He is very hopeful about their upcoming trip to states.

“We’ve been working out, but sort of scaling it back from the intense workouts. We want to be fresh for states,” added Wyss. The team’s goal was to crown as many wrestlers for regionals and then place as many for states.

Any Leesville wrestler finishing in the top four in their weight class will move on to the State Championship tournament in Greensboro on Feb. 23-25.
