Sports “inside the walls”

In college, it might be hard for some people to keep moving and stay active. In order to do this, there are a number of things you could do: go to the gym, play on a sports or club team, or participate in intramurals. Some people need motivation, such as being around their friends and having fun. Intramural sports give this opportunity.

The word “intramural” literally means ‘within the walls’. These are sports teams within the school that play against other teams in the school. This is a good way to play a sport on a team but not have the pressure of being on a traveling sports team or a club team.

These sports are as competitive as you make them. If people take the team seriously, then the games and tournaments will be serious. The teams are open to any students who attend the school.

“At my school, two weeks before games you go to the rec center to sign up,” says Danyelle Rube, a sophomore at Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount. “The games are usually competitive and the tournament is ‘round-robin’ between teams at the school. I was on the intramural team for volleyball and dodgeball, and I had a ton of fun.”

A variety of Intramural sports are offered at colleges, which change depending on the school. These may include dodgeball, football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, beach volleyball, ping pong, billiards and more. The teams compete against each other for bragging rights against other sports. At some schools, they compete for prizes, such as T-shirts at UNC-Chapel Hill.

If you’re looking for a way to stay active and have fun, a great way to do this would be to participate in Intramurals.
