Math meet brings home the bronze

Led by Wendell Bernard Barnwell II, the unofficial Leesville Road math team finished third out of a strong field of local schools at the Todd Fuller Mathematics Competition. The results have finally come in after two months of grading.

“I was surprised at how well we did at the meet,” said Barnwell. “I don’t know if we’ve ever been to that one before, but it seems as though we started off the season on the right foot.”

Do Won Cha, Jin Ha Choi, Mark Delacruz, Alan Koruth, Sahil Dayal and Shrivar Ramakan traveled to NC State University on Oct. 13 to compete against 17 other schools and 83 individuals.

Choi, senior and 2012 AMC winner, put the team on his back with an individual score of 33.25 out of the 140 team score. With a total possible score of 200 points, the multiple choice test proved difficult for all students.

Although none of Leesville’s mathletes received the $500 cash reward for winning, the team can boast that they placed higher than all other Wake County schools. However, with a group of only six people, the team is still recruiting more students.

“It’d be nice if there were more people interested,” said Barnwell. “It’d be nice if there were girls on the team, like a balance. There are girls who can score higher than some guys, and they need to be on the team.”

The math team will continue their season with the popular online competition, Moody’s Math Challenge, in March.

“I feel that students’ skills are not being showcased enough in the classrooms. Math class and homework is practice, but this [math meet team] is where students can apply what they’ve learned and challenge themselves,” said Koruth.
