Lady Pride blowout Heritage, 62-26

Editor’s Note: Before the snow hit and cancelled school for the remainder of the week, Leesville Women’s Varsity Basketball faced off against Heritage on Monday night. The recap follows.

The Lady Pride came out swinging against Heritage Huskies and never stopped, coasting to a 62-26 victory.

Leesville (3-5, 7-10) tied for 4th place in the Cap-8 with the victory. Heritage (0-7, 2-12) remained winless in the conference this year.

“Defense was key,” said senior Zaria Maynard. “It gave us way more opportunities on offense.”

The first quarter ended 20-7, highlighted by an “And 1” by Kelly Funderburk.

Heritage was held to an abysmal 2 points in the second quarter. The Lady Pride, however, did not share the Huskies’ offensive troubles, as an Emma Taylor three-pointer opened up the second frame.

Leesville selflessly found an open player on the fastbreak as time wound down and took a 36-9 lead into the half.

The second half was rather uneventful, as Leesville only built on a massive lead and Heritage unsuccessfully tried to end the game on a positive note.

The Lady Pride have seen constant improvement through the season, and it showed on Friday.

“As a team we’ve become closer, and we know each other’s strengths and weaknesses,” said Maynard. “It’s given us more opportunities scoring wise, and we’ve become a lot better on defense.”
