After two years of hiatus, the season three premiere of Sherlock, titled “The Empty Hearse”, aired in the UK on January 1 and will premiere on January 19 in the US. The premiere was anticipated to answer many questions the season two finale posed.

The season two finale ended with very little explanation for the direction season three would take, leaving viewers anticipating a very emotional season three premiere. However, to everyone’s surprise, the season three premiere left them smiling. Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlock Holmes, and Martin Freeman, John Watson, used their onscreen chemistry to create humor between their characters.

Humor is an aspect of the show that is not often displayed. Holmes is awkward and Watson is serious which leads to a sincere yet different type of friendship. “The Empty Hearse” expands their relationship nicely all the while keeping the viewer interested in the crime Holmes must solve.

One of the many great qualities of Sherlock is the way the audience is able to see the world from Holmes’ point of view at times. Words appear on the screen which regard to what Holmes is thinking, reading and seeing at the moment. The music is also a great addition as it adds suspense to certain scenes and always matches the tone of the atmosphere.

Finally, what ties everything all together and truly makes the show fantastic is the acting. Cumberbatch and Freeman are the perfect actors for their parts along with their fellow cast members. Everyone has a unique relationship with one another which pays off when they need to have a certain onscreen relationship.

Sherlock is bound to continue to be a success with its upcoming episodes. In fact, Steven Moffat, executive producer of Sherlock, assured viewers that the season three finale will leave them “just as frustrated as they ever were” which will only keep its viewers invested in the show.
