Prom is one of the most expensive dates anyone will ever go on. With high expectations that are almost impossible to live up to, is it worth it?

Prom has been a spring ritual for high school students for over a hundred years, but as time goes on, expectations and prices become higher. After surveying students around Leesville, a couple will spends on average anywhere from 400 to 600 dollars on prom. That’s an extraordinary amount of money to spend on a date. A study done by Business Insider suggests that the national average is even higher.

Of that high dollar amount, a nice guy will pay two-thirds of that. So guys have to pay 200 to 400 dollars for a night that’s almost completely for the girl, and guys will admit they’re only doing it for the girl. Girls shouldn’t take that the wrong way though, a guy should be willing to put down money for a girl, but there are so many better things a guy could do for a girl with 300 dollars.

Grant Pfeiffer, junior, went to prom with a friend, and being a chivalrous gentlemen, he still paid for his date’s ticket and dinner. He spent over 200 dollars on a night out with a friend.

Andres Escobar, senior, went to prom by himself. “I just wanted it to be friendly, I didn’t want to deal with the drama,” said Escobar. “I didn’t really want to go, and I really didn’t feel like going, but it’s senior year, so I figured I should go for the memories.“

However, prom is of the few high school events you’ll remember for the rest of your life, and no one can put a pricetag on the memories.

Hannah Williams, senior, looked forward to the big dance, but still agreed the cost may have outweighed it. “I think It will be fun, but I think it is a waste of money,” said Williams.

Several students were asked if there was anything that could make prom worth the price, and no one had an answer. Between expensive dresses, expensive tuxedos and fancy dinners, prom is just something you spend a fair amount of money on, and there’s no way around that.

Prom may cost an outrageous amount of money, but it’s one of the best nights you’ll have. Especially if you spend it with the right people. So even if the high price tag isn’t justified, it’s something everyone should experience.
