Leesville has reinforced an overlooked policy stating that on-campus students are not allowed to order delivery food. The school had to reinforce or remind students of the policy due to many students ordering food to the school during smart lunch.
Leesville provides freshman and sophomores on campus with the ability to purchase lunch and allows juniors and seniors to go off campus for lunch. The issue of students ordering food never become a problem until the 2014-15 school year.
“I’ve seen [delivered food] a little bit more compared to this time last year,” said Omar, a member of the lunch staff.
The policy was sent out to students and parents in early September, only a couple of weeks into the school year.
Kaden VanHoosier was one of the students who ordered food to the school before the policy was reinforced. VanHoosier said, “I wanted something new; not the same pizza the cafeteria serves everyday.”
Smart lunch was a big factor in advertising and reinforcing the policy. Dr. Muttillo said, “Students started to [order] more often with smart lunch being longer.”
Delivery food competes with the cafeteria and does not follow the nutritional guidelines for students. Lunch staff member Omar also saw where students may have been coming from, Omar said, “The first couple weeks it was very overcrowded; [ordering food] may have been the alternative.”
Whether it was an alternative for students who were unable to get cafeteria food or students who were looking for something new, food delivery is prohibited at Leesville.
Another reason the policy was reinforced was to protect students and the school. “To me, it was a safety concern,” said Dr. Muttillo.
The policy states that if students were to ignore the policy, food will be refused and returned back to the restaurant.
