Saturday October 25, Leesville’s Team Pride took part in the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation walk. JDRF is an organization dedicated to finding a cure to Type 1 Diabetes, as well as aiding those living through it.
“JDRF is important because it shows people with Type 1 Diabetes that they have support and we are there for them,” said Bri Reid, sophomore and Executive Council member.
The walk was a culmination of many weeks’ preparation. Two weeks before the walk Leesville’s Executive Council collected donations. The donations were collected during first period. Teachers and departments competed to fundraise the most.
The top two classrooms received a Bojangles breakfast, and the teachers of the winning department got a free lunch. Donations were collected in class, and online donations could be printed to count towards class totals.
The walk took place at Walnut Creek and groups including schools, companies and individual fundraising teams showed up. After the walk, a 2+ mile trek around Time Warner Music Pavillion free Jersey Mike’s subs were given out and live music was played.
This year Leesville fundraised over $9,000, more than doubling last year’s total of under $4,000.
Alli Perrin, senior and student-body President, said, “JDRF was a huge success this year. We have a lot of momentum going into the upcoming food drive.”
