Orchestra performs winter concert

On Friday, December 9, the Leesville Road High School Orchestra performed their annual winter concert. Led by director Mark Stiles, both the string and chamber orchestras combined to put on a performance in Leesville’s auditorium.

The string orchestra played “French Folk Carol”, Mozart’s “Symphony #29” and “Ellis Island.”

Chamber orchestra followed with the notorious “Nutcracker Suite”, “Concerto Grosso Op. 3 No. 8”, “Scheherazade” and “America’s Cup”. The chamber orchestra was perfectly synchronized and had a great sound.

Katie Cao and Grace Taylor, seniors and first violinists, graced the audience with their solos in the “Concerto Grosso” piece. Both played their solo beautifully.

“I thought [the concert] was really good. We had two solos, me and Grace Taylor (sic), and I think we did really well,” said Cao.

To conclude the performance, the two orchestras fused and played “Christmas Waltz”, the shortest and only Christmas song in the entire concert.

“We practice everyday in class, and we start right on time so we can squeeze all the music in because we are playing a lot of different stuff,” said Taylor.

Orchestra has been incredibly busy during the holiday season: They have performed at Schiano’s, the Governor’s Mansion, and with the Raleigh Symphony, along with their routine winter concert. Their next performance will be December 19 at Grace AME Zion Church.
