Movie, for example. It was only fitting that Into the Woods end the year with one last well-orchestrated bang.

Into the Woods, based on the Stephen Sondheim musical of the same name, follows a large cast of classic storybook characters, the main two being the baker (James Corden) and his wife (Emily Blunt). A family curse placed on the baker by a witch (Meryl Streep) prevents him and his wife from having children, something they want more than anything. Together, they venture into the woods in order to reverse the spell. Stories quickly intertwine as each character searches for their happily ever after in the woods. (Also features Anna Kendrick, Johnny Depp, and Chris Pine.)

The film was released on December 25 and has so far earned a $94,503,515 gross. It ranks at #30 on the Box Office 2014 movie list.

Sondheim’s musical is unlike any other. Into the Woods is virtually unpredictable and manages to keep audiences on their toes. In addition, the plot tastefully encompasses all elements of a great film: suspense, humor, romance, thrills and even mild scares. There’s something for everyone in Into the Woods.

Since Into the Woods is also a musical (with many fantastic songs, one might add), the star-studded cast deserves a round of applause. 80% of the film’s script is sung. Combining both singing and acting is a hard feat, but the cast does this beautifully and without many flaws. This comes as a surprise, especially because a majority of the cast members (like Corden and Blunt) aren’t known for their singing. Each still managed to pull off their roles with excellence.

All in all, Into the Woods is a captivating film, suitable for anyone who thoroughly enjoys magic, catchy musicals and dark humor.
