Leesville’s National Latin Honor Society has welcomed another wave of devoted Latin lovers. The club held its annual spring induction ceremony this past Monday.
An impressive number of 19 inductees were accepted to become members on Monday.
“It’s a pretty big deal, it’ll look good on college resumes, and it’s an interesting group of people to be around,” said Jacob Phillips, sophomore and newly inducted NLHS member.
Becoming a member of NLHS also means that a student is a member of the North Carolina Junior Classical League, National Junior Classical League and Association for the Promotion of the Study of Latin.
Members of NLHS also must meet certain requirements. To become eligible for NLHS membership, a student must be enrolled in Latin IV and have earned at least two A’s and a B in Latin I-III.
“It definitely made me think that I needed to study more and make sure that I got good grades so I could join the society, and it’s a good way to ensure that you only have the best students in the club,” said Phillips.
On induction day, inductees are given crowns of leaves to wear throughout the day in order to show off their accomplishments. During inductions, veteran members are encouraged to provide a variety of exquisite Ancient Roman plates. Dr. Mash and the NLHS president help the new members recite several Latin verses while passing along the flame from their candle to fellow inductees.
With many new doors opening for them in the Latin world, including a popular convention this spring, NLHS’s new members have an exciting road ahead of them.
