Singing Valentines for Sale

One of the most festive days at Leesville is surprisingly Valentine’s day, and the day’s festivities include the delivery of singing valentines. Chorus members visit classrooms during first and second period to sing a song and deliver valentines. Classes are temporarily interrupted for this highly anticipated Leesville tradition.

Singing valentines were sold in the lobby of the main building during SMART lunch until February 9. The notes and carnations will be delivered on Valentine’s Day, Wednesday, February 14.

There was a special price this year: $4 can get you one singing valentine while $10 could get you three. There were a variety of songs you could choose from whether you wanted to send one to a friend or to a special someone. This year, the songs you could choose from included: “For the Longest Time” by Billy Joel, “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley, the “Friends” theme song, “Stand By Me” by Ben King, “Say You Won’t Let Go” by James Arthur, and “Beautiful Soul” by Jesse McCartney.

A few songs will return from previous years, such their most popular choice, the “Friends” theme song. However a few new songs were added to the list of options..

Meredith Bateman, junior and three-year chorus member said, “This year Ms. DIckens gave CP the chance to pick a song and put our own twist to it…so we just make an arrangement of it, set the parts, then we perform it for the class, and she chooses which ones she wants to use [for singing valentines].”

From the time they pick out the songs, they spend about three weeks practicing to perform in small groups in front of the classes around Leesville. “I like to see my friend’s reaction because sometimes [I’ll be in the group that performs to their class], and it’s really funny to see their reaction. Or if it’s a teacher I really like, they really enjoy singing Valentines,” said Bateman.

Whether you send one to a friend, a teacher, boyfriend, or girlfriend, singing Valentines fill the air with lightheartedness and elation from everyone in the Leesville community.
