The Weeknd, also known as Abel Tesfaye, dropped two new singles this month: “Heartless” and “Blinding Lights.” These two singles come as a delight to fans, who haven’t heard new music from The Weeknd since March 2018 when he released his first EP “My Dear Melancholy.” His last full album “Starboy” came out in 2016, so fans are hungry for new music. While he hasn’t announced a release date, the two songs are likely to be on his next album, speculated to be named “Chapter 6.”
On November 26, the Weeknd released the first of the two singles, “Heartless.” The song is likely inspired by his breakup with longtime girlfriend Bella Hadid, which happened back in August of this year. It’s lyrics reflect a loss of hope with love, with the chorus repeating “cause I’m heartless.” The song is somewhat reminiscent of one of his first albums, “Trilogy,” and ends with drawn out vocals. While the lyrics are fairly depressing, the song itself has the more upbeat sound of his recent music, with a strong bass and an eighties feel.
Then, just three days later, he released another song, “Blinding Lights.” My personal favorite of the two, “Blinding Lights,” has a very nostalgic sound, and fits right in with his last album, “Starboy.” It sounds straight out of the eighties, and reminds me of the song “Take on Me” by A-ha, with a similar beat and synthesizers. Its retro sound appeals to older generations as well– my mom loved it after one listen. In this song, Tesfaye sings about his struggles with rising to stardom and managing his personal relationships.
With two new singles just released, it’s clear there’s a new album on the way. Likely coming early next year, it seems the music will continue to follow his recent eighties vibe.
