Going to the gym could be very difficult, especially if you can’t figure out a workout that satisfies you. The gym in general is typically a complicated place to feel comfortable at but when you’re at zumba you’ll definitely have a new feel for working out. (Photo Used by Permission of Kaitlyn Kenna)
On February 19, I attended my first Zumba workout at Fitness Connection. Zumba is a way to burn calories, dance and laugh with women and men of all ages.
At first, I was a bit skeptical because a couple of my friends complained about the class being difficult and the dance moves being hard to follow. Although the dances that were latin based were difficult to follow, the atmosphere was perfect. Throughout the night, I never felt uncomfortable and was smiling from ear to ear the entire time. The room was filled with laughter and women shouting ‘woot woot’ that encouraged others and helped with certain dance moves.
The class was an hour long but never dropped its intensity. I for sure had to step aside and wipe sweat off my face and take several sips of water to stay hydrated.
In Zumba, you groove to the beats of Salsa, Cumbia, Merengue, Rumba, Mambo, Belly Dance, Flamenco, Samba, Tango, Reggatone and Hip Hop. These different types of dances are definitely more on the sexy side, causing me to go out of my comfort zone.
Even with my inability to shake my hips, others in the class were still making me feel great and saying encouraging things such as “you go girl”.
The one downside of this Zumba class is the lack of alternated moves. At most exercise classes, there are alternate moves for people who cannot bend down low or keep up with fast pacing moves. There were women who could not get the full experience due to their lack of ability to squat low.
Zumba is a lot of fun, and I definitely will be attending more classes. The atmosphere is amazing, and you’ll burn a decent amount of calories doing it.
