Amazon is one of the most successful and well-known companies in the United States. Jeff Bezos has been at the helm of the company since it was created 27 years ago, but on Tuesday Bezos announced he would be stepping down from his position as CEO.

Bezos is stepping down to become an executive chairman with the company. “In the Exec Chair role, I intend to focus my energies and attention on new products and early initiatives,” Bezos wrote in a letter to his employees. He says that even though he still loves what he does, it “is a deep responsibility, and it’s consuming. When you have a responsibility like that, it’s hard to put attention on anything else.”

He also wrote about wanting to step down so he can have the time and energy to focus on his other projects including the Day 1 fund, Bezos Earth Fund, The Washington Post, and Blue Origin, his space exploration company.

“I’m super passionate about the impact I think these organizations can have,” Bezos wrote in his letter.

As for Bezos’s replacement, his name is Andy Jassy. Jassy who is a longtime Amazon employee who has been with the company since 1997. He helped build the company’s cloud service business and is now the chief executive of Amazon Web Services.

Bezos has nothing but confidence when it comes to promoting Jassy to CEO. “Andy is well known inside the company and has been at Amazon almost as long as I have. He will be an outstanding leader, and he has my full confidence,” writes Bezos.

Amazon and Jeff Bezos have been synonymous ever since the company’s creation. Even though Bezos is giving up his leadership for a smaller position, it would be hard to separate the two from each other. The new era for Amazon with Andy Jassy at the helm is something that everyone should look out for.
