Students everywhere have AirPods in their ears. Airpods have both social and academic impacts.
According to a poll, out of 200 students, 158 of them said that they wear AirPods in school.
WebMD explains how music affects your concentration and focus both positively and negatively: classical and instrumental music has been shown to improve quiz scores.
Some teachers are fine with their students wearing AirPods during the classwork part of school. However, during direct instruction time, they find it difficult and rude for students to be listening to music rather than paying attention to the lesson.
“There is a time and a place. So if it’s during lecture notes, it’s a little disrespectful to the teacher, but if you are doing independent work, and it’s work you can listen to music then I’m fine with it,” said Dr. Eagle, a science teacher.
Other teachers don’t like the AirPods at all. They find it rude and disrespectful that students wear headphones during class time.
“The opinion has always been the same. Ten years ago, same as now. Nobody ten years ago would have headphones in their ears. I don’t know why it’s different now just because it’s wireless. Two people talking to you…you’ve got something in your ear. Nobody can listen to that, no matter how smart they are,” said Mr. Argao, a science teacher.
Wearing AirPods during class teaching time is different from wearing them during independent work.
Bonnie Burns, a senior, thinks that students wearing AirPods isn’t a bad thing.
“I think it’s a good thing for students, so they can do their own thing during class when it’s allowed by the teacher,” said Burns.
Sawyer Lisk, a freshman, thinks that people wearing AirPods during instruction time don’t learn anything because they can’t focus.
“I think it shows that they aren’t paying full attention. But I think it is on them not to want to pay attention. So I don’t think it’s a problem because it just affects their life and grades. I don’t think it should be a problem because the people who want to learn don’t wear AirPods and the people that don’t really care will,” said Lisk
Students who wear Airpods in class can’t focus, making it harder to learn. Although students want to wear Airpods in class, it does not promote learning.
Students and teachers both think that wearing AirPods during teaching time does not help students learn.
