Golden Globes 2024

On Sunday, January 7, 2024, the Golden Globes hosted their eighty-first award celebration. The Golden Globes recognizes the greatest achievements in movies and television shows, whether it’s the best actor or film in a specific genre (Golden Globe Categories 2024).

Outfits:

A big part of the Golden Globes is dressing for photos on the red carpet. Often actors will dress up in outfits referencing whatever film or show they recently starred in.

Winners:

In 2023, Barbie and Oppenheimer, two very different movies, were released to theaters on the same day, leading to heated debates over which film was better.

BothBarbie and Oppenheimer earned nominations for many categories such as “Best Motion Picture,” The directors of both movies and the starring actors of each were also nominated for awards like “Best Actor/Actress in a Drama Motion Picture.”

“I really wanted Barbie to win, so I was of course happy when it won the box office achievement but and when the song ‘What Was I Made For’ won the best original score, too. I was so grateful,” said Nyah Diane, junior.

Barbie’s end credit song “What Was I Made For” by Billie Eilish won “Best Original Song.” Meanwhile, Oppenheimer won an award for its soundtrack as well. The score “Oppenheimer,” from Oppenheimer won “Best Original Score.”

Oppenheimer won best drama film and that was all I needed to see. I stopped watching after that,” said Henry Cassetta, sophomore.

Aside from movies, the hit television series Beef and The Bear were both nominated for almost all of the awards for television series.

“I loved The Bearand especially loved the actress Ayo Edebiri who played Sydney in the show and she actually won best actress in a TV series which is great,” said Sophie Ayuk-Takem, junior.

The Last of Us was also a popular series in 2023; however, it didn’t win any awards, and nor did the actors who starred in it.

“I really liked The Last of Us… it got nominated for a lot but didn’t win anything which was… not good,” said Ethan Bonavita, junior.

Jo Koy Incident:

Every year the Golden Globes chooses a comedian or actor to host the event. They’ll introduce that year’s nominees in a humorous manner… at least they’re supposed to.

Comedian Jo Koy hosted this year’s Golden Globes event; however, his jokes stirred up controversy.

His jokes included ones such as, “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL: On the Golden Globes we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.” This joke did not land, the room was silent and after catching a glimpse of Taylor Swift sipping her drink he said, “I’m sorry about that.”

Jo Koy’s entire performance seemed awkward, and he was often backtracking or using the excuse that he only had ten days to prepare his speech.

Another joke of Jo’s that bounced was, “Oppenheimer is based on a 721-page prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project, and Barbie is on a plastic doll with big boobies.”

This joke got Jo the most backlash — “I mean Barbie was literally made to bring women up and show how bad sexism is and the guy literally made a joke about Barbie having big boobies it’s so weird,” said Ashley Kibicho, junior.

According to a poll posted on the @lrhsnews Instagram account, 90% of students who answered said they did not find his jokes funny, which shows just how badly his jokes landed.

While his jokes were hard to digest, it’s important to not let it overshadow the immense success celebrated at the ceremony, the multiple men and women of color who won awards, and directors finally getting deserved recognition.
