Hillsborough Street was flooded with NC State fans celebrating the men’s basketball team beating Duke 76-64, and the women’s basketball team beating the Texas Longhorns 76-66 on Sunday, March 31st.
Both teams secured their spot in the final four of the NCAA tournaments.
The last time the NC State men’s basketball team was in the final form of the NCAA tournament was 1983 when they won the tournament.
Rowdy fans of all ages decked out in red came to celebrate on Hillsborough street–a well-known road going through the campus. People took part in university chants, reunited with friends, and blasted music.
Many Leesville students posted pictures celebrating the wins at the Belltower.
One of those students, Morgan Benish, freshman, said, “The Bell Tower was super cool because everyone is there for the same reason and there are no principles behind it, it is just that we are all there celebrating together.”
Leesville parent and NC State alumnus, Matt Key, has been a devoted State fan all his life. Key said, “My love for the Wolfpack comes from the time I spent with my dad and my experiences with him. This run in the tournament helps me think about those memories.”
Key’s dad played for the NC State Basketball team from 1958 to 1963, so he grew up loving the University. Key was five years old the last time the men’s team made it this far in the NCAA tournament.
Key described the full circle moment, “Going to the bell tower to celebrate big wins with my kids is a great way to share those moments, passing on school traditions and our shared passion.”
The men’s basketball team faces off against Purdue on Saturday, April 6 at 6:00 pm, and the women go head-to-head with South Carolina on Friday, April 5 at 7:00 pm.
Make sure to tune in to support the Wolfpack!
