high hopes for leesville’s winter track and field season

Winter track tryouts took place on October 30 and 31 with makeup tryouts on November 8 and 12. 111 athletes made the team with 61 making varsity. Tryouts consisted of a 20m sprint, a 400m, an 800m, and both broad and vertical jumps.

Eric Gamble, head coach,  wants to make varsity a more important title than in the past. He has set varsity standards for each distance and field event, allowing athletes to move up in the roster throughout the season.

Evan Pottschmidt, junior who runs the 1000m and the 1600m, said, “It was pretty fun, it’s usually cold though because we ran outdoor meets a lot. I also enjoy not having to run 5ks.”

Ruth Metafaria, junior who runs the 800m and 1000m, said, “I did pretty well last season and qualified for states in the 4×800 with my friend, I loved getting food after meets.”

Winter track consists of 13 meets, 5 of which are indoor meets. The first meet, Dash for Doobie, takes place on November 16 at Reagan High School. It is a 2-mile race that raises money for a scholarship in remembrance of the death of Runner Nick “Doobie” Doub

Leesville placed 17 out of 51 teams in indoor states last year and is seeking to break into the top ten this year.
