After starting the 2024 school year, there has been an influx of new clubs created by students. Clubs are a great way to connect people with common interests and showcase your leadership skills to prospective colleges. Because of the diversity of students creating them, the clubs have a wide variety of subjects, ranging from religious studies to fishing.
Leesville Legacy
Leesville Legacy was one of the first new clubs created this year. This club’s mission is to foster a more inclusive school community and create new lasting traditions for future Leesville generations.
“Most students at Leesville complain about the fact that we don’t have traditions and other things that other high schools might have, so I wanted to start a club to implement new traditions,” said Izzie Woodbury, junior. Woodbury is the president and co-founder of the Leesville Legacy Club.
One of the reasons Woodbury wanted to start this club was to boost her college resume. “It looks really good for college, and I thought it would be fun… to work with my peers,” said Woodbury.
The club is open to whoever wants to apply and create new traditions for the school. “I’m really hoping to reach all the students because I know there are different traditions and things that other people might want that I might not know about,” said Woodbury.
Bible Study Club
The Bible Study club is fairly self-explanatory — it’s a club for people who want to learn more about the Bible.
“We share the gospel with everyone and we make it in a way where everyone can understand it and how we can apply it to real life,” said Sawyer Lisk, junior. Lisk is the vice president and co-founder of the club.
“[We] decided to create the club because public school is not the best environment for people who want to learn about the Bible, not a lot of people have access to Bibles,” said Connor Read, junior, president, and other co-founder of the club.
“We decided to create this club because we felt there wasn’t a club here that shares the word of God, and so we decided to make the Bible club, so everyone could get a better understanding,” said Lisk.
Lisk and Read are hoping to reach anyone at Leesville who is interested in studying the Bible. “I’m hoping to reach everyone, anyone who wants to read the Bible, just come on Thursdays,” said Read.
Debate Club
Debate Club focuses on teaching students about public forum debate, which is a type of debate that encourages speakers to use evidence to argue for or against a topic. Public forum typically deals with current issues.
“We talk about good speaking skills, good rhetoric skills… learning how to debate,” said Elenore Tarry, junior. Tarry is the president and founder of the Debate Club.
“It’s a way for new students to gain confidence and speaking skills, and how to confidently present themselves in front of large groups of people,” said Ashley Stanziale, junior. Stanziale is the co-president of the Debate Club.
Debate is one of Tarry’s hobbies, and she created this club to share her hobby with the school community. “If I enjoy it, I know a lot of other kids would,” said Tarry.
Tarry and Stanziale hope their club will reach all the different school communities, and they hope to take their club to debate competitions in the next few years.
Fishing Club
The Fishing Club teaches about different fishing techniques and safe fishing tactics. They also educate their member about the conservation of fishing water.
“I decided to create a club because I’m passionate about fishing, and I wanted to start something up with my friends,” said Theo Fraiser, freshman. Frasier is the founder and president of the club.
“I thought it would look good on my [college] application, and I thought it would be fun,” said Wilson Cain, sophomore. Cain is the vice president of the Fishing Club.
“I’m hoping to reach new fishermen and to teach different people about fishing,” said Fraiser. This club’s main goal is to spread the word about what they do and gain new members.
These are just a few of the new clubs at Leesville this year. The increase in the number and diversity of clubs makes it so there is something for everyone to join.
