Leesville Basketball plays exciting season opener against Cary High School

On Tuesday, November 19, Leesville Road High School took on Cary High School in an intense basketball game. The game opened the 2024-2025 basketball season.

From the first jump ball, Leesville and Cary went back and forth — neither team ever took a commanding lead. At halftime, the Pride led 34-32.

Quinn Corser, senior, said, “Our team needs to be dedicated and focused this season to succeed.”

The Leesville team was able to do just that. During the second half, Leesville came back with a renewed sense of energy.

In the third quarter, Cary took a small lead, but Leesville returned a higher level of intensity — sharp shooting and aggressive defense made the difference between a win and loss for the night.

Hayes Oxendine, senior, scored three clutch free throws in the last five minutes, while players such as Jaiyon Faucette, junior, made crucial defensive blocks.

The student section’s energy was a key motivator for the basketball team’s performance throughout the game.

Nylan Rush, sophomore, said, “[The student section] makes us want to be here. It makes me play good and makes me comfortable.”

It is only the start for Leesville basketball. Their impressive performance against Cary High School is only a preview of this year’s potential.

Kierre Baker, senior, said, “We’re just trying to show everyone we’re a good team, and that we can compete like everyone else.”

Tuesday’s game was the first of many, but right now Pride Basketball has a focus on bettering their team structure.

Baker said, “We have a lot of new people, so once we get the communication down, just talking on defense and getting to know each other more, we’ll be good.”

Leesville Basketball is looking to build their reputation, compete at a high level, and bring home a state championship.
