Leesville Mock Trial team develops life skills

Mock Trial is a debate-based club that allows students to gather together to simulate civil or criminal trials. The club allows students who are interested in law and theater alike come together to mimic attorneys and witnesses in the regional, state, and national competitions.

After finalizing team members through a tryout process of students formulating and presenting opening statements, the Mock Trial club works to prepare for the upcoming regional competition on February 8. In competing, students will be asked to argue in favor of both prosecution/plaintiff and defense against an opposing counsel of high school students.

“We have 2 different teams who are going to compete on the regional level. The competition case this year is a civil case, where the plaintiff is suing on the grounds of wrongful death following an accident at a trampoline park. We have started to prepare just by reading through the case document and taking notes on the complexities of the case,” said Nadia Ferjani, club president.

All Mock Trial clubs meet with an attorney advisor to aid them in competition and trial rules. At Leesville, Piedmont Eastern Litigation works with the club to support the team as they prepare for competition.

“I want to be a lawyer in the future… it’s really interesting to get to talk to real lawyers to hear about the legal field, and even get to visit the law firm,” said Taylor Gorell, senior.

Mock Trial is an excellent opportunity for students to better their public speaking skills and explore a career in law.
