Was Ashton Jeanty robbed of the 2024 Heisman?

The Heisman Trophy is one of the most prestigious awards in college football, given annually to the player considered the most outstanding in the nation.

This year, Travis Hunter of Colorado walked away with the honor, but not without sparking debate.

Many football fans and analysts questioned whether Hunter deserved the award over Boise State’s star running back, Ashton Jeanty.

Both players had incredible seasons, and the controversy has led to heated discussions in the college football world.

The Case for Travis Hunter

Travis Hunter’s 2024 season was nothing short of historic. As a two-way player for the University of Colorado, he made significant contributions on both offense and defense, a rarity in modern college football.

Hunter finished the season with 92 receptions for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns as a wide receiver, along with four interceptions and 11 pass breakups as a cornerback.

His versatility and ability to excel in two demanding positions made him a standout candidate.

Hunter’s big-game performances also helped his case.

In Colorado’s blowout win over Oklahoma State, he recorded three touchdowns and an interception. Additionally, Hunter recorded a forced fumble to seal the win against Baylor.

Moments like these showed his ability to perform under pressure.

Hunter’s unique two-way play earned him several accolades, including the Bednarik Award for best defensive player and the Biletnikoff Award for best receiver.

His impact on both sides of the ball drew comparisons to legendary athletes like Charles Woodson and Deion Sanders.

Hunter himself stated, “You’ve never seen a player like me,” highlighting his confidence and the unprecedented nature of his contributions.

The Case for Ashton Jeanty

On the other hand, Ashton Jeanty’s 2024 season was one for the record books. As Boise State’s lead running back, Jeanty racked up 344 carries, 2,497 rushing yards, 29 rushing touchdowns.

He led the nation in all-purpose yards, averaging 192.1 yards per game, and carried his team to a Mountain West Conference championship and a berth in the College Football Playoff.

Jeanty’s performance brought him within striking distance of Barry Sanders’ long-standing single-season rushing record of 2,628 yards, a feat that has stood since 1988.

Jeanty’s consistency throughout the season was remarkable. While Hunter had some quieter games, Jeanty delivered week in and week out.

Against Georgia Southern, he put up a season-high 267 rushing yards and six touchdowns, showcasing his dominance.

Following the Heisman announcement, Jeanty expressed his gratitude for being a finalist but admitted some disappointment. “It wasn’t the result that I was hoping for. But I kind of just had to take a moment, debrief, and just appreciate the fact that I was even here. The fact that I was here is going to be so inspiring to many,” Jeanty told KTVB.

Breaking Down the Debate

The debate over who deserved the award ultimately comes down to the criteria for the Heisman Trophy. Should the award go to the most versatile and unique player or the most statistically dominant one?

Hunter’s supporters argue that his ability to play and excel on both sides of the ball is a feat we may not see again for years.

Travis Hunter is as good as advertised. Talent-Instincts-and RIDICULOUS stamina. And now in his 3rd year has experience to go along with it,” said Kirk Herbstreit, ESPN college football analyst.

However, Jeanty’s advocates point to his sheer production and importance to Boise State’s success.

Former NFL running back Jonathan Stewart weighed in on the debate, stating, “Ashton Jeanty is the Heisman winner. If you swap him to Colorado they are a top 10 team! If you take Travis Hunter and swap him to Boise State they are not a ranked team! Case closed.”

Another factor in the debate is team performance. Colorado finished the season with a 9-3 record with their first bowl game appearance in four years, which was impressive given their struggles in previous years, while Boise State went 12-1.

Some argue that Jeanty’s role in leading his team to more wins should have given him the edge.

Fan Reactions

As expected, fans have been vocal about the decision.

Colorado supporters celebrated Hunter’s win, calling it a well-deserved acknowledgment of his unique skill set.

“Hunter played both sides of the ball at an elite level. He deserved to win the Heisman,” said Isaiah Rogers, freshman.

Boise State fans, however, felt their star player was snubbed.

“Jeanty is on pace to break an insane record. I don’t know how he didn’t win the Heisman,” said Davione Keyes-Christian, freshman.

Looking Ahead

Both players have bright futures ahead, regardless of the Heisman decision.

Hunter is projected to be a top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, with teams valuing his rare ability to contribute on both sides of the ball.

Jeanty, meanwhile, has also seen his draft stock rise significantly and is expected to be the first running back selected.

In the end, the 2024 Heisman Trophy debate will likely remain a topic of discussion for years to come.

Both Travis Hunter and Ashton Jeanty had seasons that will be remembered and their legacies are secure in college football history.

Whether the award went to the right player depends on how you define “outstanding.” Is it about versatility, or is it about statistical dominance? For now, the debate continues.
