Central North Carolinians should be preparing for 1-3 inches of snow over the weekend.
ABC 11 reported a Friday storm mixed with night time temperatures in the 20’s will result in snowfall through Saturday.
Friday night, January 10, will bring temperatures dropping to the high 20s or low 30s. Saturday’s temperatures will be similar to the previous night. Saturday night, temperatures will go back down into the 20 degree range, opening up the opportunity for black ice to develop.
Black ice is a unique form of ice, with a transparent top layer. The transparency makes the ice harder to detect, poising a danger to drivers.
If threats such as black ice continue through the weekend, Leesville students could have an impacted schedule next week.
Sami Fiduccia, sophomore, said, “People won’t be able to get to school or the buses will be messed up and then makeup days are going to be bad.”
If this storm immensely affects Wake County, it will disrupt the schedule for Leesville’s finals.
Ryan Kounidry, junior, said, “I don’t care if it snows. I can have more time to study.”
The last measurable snowfall in Raleigh, NC, occurred on January 29, 2022. Since then, the Triangle area has been in a snow drought — now the second longest in history.
Snow days have benefits among mental health and general fun. Popular snow day activities include building a snowman, sledding, having a snowball fight and creating a snow angel.
Jake Kriwox, sophomore, said, “Snow days give students some break time. When your week is packed, there are not many days off.”
As North Carolinnians prepare for this rare snowfall, potential school disruptions and hazards grow. The weekend’s winter storm is sure to come with an opportunity for memories and wintery excitement.
