The fall semester of the 2024-25 school year introduced the new Songwriting Club where students who are interested in writing their own songs can meet and help grow in their songwriting abilities. Students Casey Sullivan, Jayden Lewis, and Syd Worth started the club.
“I love songwriting, and I know that a lot of people at school do and a lot of young people do, and I wanted to make a community where people could songwrite and do it together,” said Casey Sullivan, junior, who is president of the songwriting club. “[As the president] I basically plan what we’re going to do each meeting and plan certain events for us to do like if we want to perform in the public, and stuff like that.”
Jayden Lewis, senior, is the vice president of the club. “[The officers] wanted to create an atmosphere where people could come and learn about songwriting and create songs,” said Lewis. As the vice president of the songwriting club, Lewis is in charge of helping to aid the president in creating meetings and planning them, as well as coming up with ideas for the songwriters in the club. Even though she is a senior, Lewis plans on continuing into the next school year.
During the spring semester of the school year, the members of the songwriting club are hoping to put on a showcase to perform for the general public. “We’re hoping to do something, either after school or at a coffee house or something, and each person could perform a song they’ve written or songs by other songwriters,” said Sullivan.
“Next semester we really want to lean more into getting people to perform, not just presenting the songs, but actually performing them themselves,” said Lewis.
“I like to write and it’s very creative and lets me express my emotions a specific way,” said Giovanni Coleman, sophomore. “[From this club I hope to learn] better ways to convey my emotions throughout writing and not sound weird or basic,” said Coleman. Coleman also said that he enjoys songwriting in his free time.
Alexa Hickman, junior, is interested in the songwriting club because she has always been very interested in music from the start and considered the songwriting club as “another introduction to music”. “Songwriting club seemed like a really good place to get out my thoughts; a better way to write them down and express them, other than journaling or telling somebody,” said Hickman.
As a member of the club, Hickman hopes to learn a better sense of expression when it comes to voicing her thoughts and emotions. “[Songwriting] is really fun to study and I like it… I’ve thought about [performing in the showcase] and [I will] most likely [perform],” said Hickman.
The songwriting club meets once a month and their next meeting is December 20, 2024. For more information about the club and how to join you can look for posters around the school, join the Remind using the code lrhsswc, or check out their Instagram @lrhs_songwriting.
