Mirrors may seem like an insignificant detail in school bathrooms, but having high-quality mirrors is actually important to students.
Whether or not students want to admit it, it’s common for both male and female students to check their appearance during a bathroom break.
High quality mirrors allow students to check their appearance which can lead to confidence and comfort within themselves.
Nobody wants to be the laughingstock of the class. Regardless of age or gender, everyone wants to look presentable—not just for themselves, but for their reputation.
If students have something on their face or they want to fix their hair, then having a true mirror is necessary. These mirrors can keep all students looking sharp.
Over the past two years, Leesville has been on a positive track. Our new principal has implemented several changes to ensure students can learn in the best environment possible.
Mirrors amplify the overall brightness of a room. Brighter lighting can improve student performance and behavior. Any splurge to enhance student learning is worth it.
Changing the mirrors can also enhance the feel of the school bathrooms by making the bathrooms feel cleaner and bigger.
I firmly believe that changing the mirrors from low quality mirrors to high quality mirrors would be favorable among most students.
“I think Leesville should get better mirrors in the bathroom because it can be really hard to see yourself with all the marks [on the mirrors], and they kind of distort people’s body image,” said Taylor Marek, junior.
Some might argue that clear mirrors in high school bathrooms could be distracting, with students constantly staring at themselves. I strongly disagree. Even with our current dirty and clouded mirrors, students can still catch a glimpse of their reflection without spending their entire day staring at it. Additionally, we have bathroom monitors who can tell when students have been in the bathroom too long.
I am not saying that it is necessary to add a vanity mirror with LED lights in our school’s bathrooms, but a simple square mirror would be beneficial and inexpensive.
It’s also important to note that half of the bathrooms at LRHS are still closed, meaning the school would need to purchase and hang fewer mirrors for now.
All in all, this change would be simple to implement. A few screws, and just like that, the mirror is hung.
