At the end of every semester, Leesville teachers give students awards based on their in-class performance. Teachers announced fall semester awards in front of the class during the last few days of the semester.
These awards are generally for the Most Improved student and the student with the Highest Average.
Jillian Hamel, sophomore, received the Highest Average award in all of her classes during fall semester.
“I felt good, proud of myself, and accomplished… I put a lot of time into doing my homework and studied a lot for all my quizzes and tests,” said Hamel.
Teachers can also give out other awards of their choosing. Mrs. Sullivan, English teacher, awarded Morgan McCormack, junior, for her Critical Thinking.
“I was surprised, and I was happy about it because it was a cool award,” said McCormack.
McCormack received the award in AP English Language and Composition, which requires students to think critically during Socratic seminars and essays. McCormack thinks her effort in her essays contributed to her receiving the award.
“[Mrs. Sullivan] liked a lot of my essays and I put a reasonable amount of thought into my homework,” said McCormack.
These awards certainly acknowledge students’ hard work but can also bring unwanted attention.
“I’ve had teachers in the past who’ve had everyone pull out a Google Form about whether they want [the award] to be announced to the class or not. I think that’s good because some kids don’t like recognition,” said Hamel.
Regardless of awards, Leesville students should be proud of completing the fall semester and keep up their efforts in the semester ahead.
