On Sunday, February 9, 2025, the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in the Super Bowl. As reactions poured in, many people have pointed out that Patrick Mahomes, quarterback for the Chiefs, struggled throughout the night.
“They have not played that bad all season, I’m surprised. They need to lock in, especially Patrick Mahomes,” said Mary Gaddy, senior and Eagles fan.
In the first half of the game, Mahomes threw for only 33 yards, an all-time low in his career. Mahomes has only ever thrown seven interceptions in his previous Super Bowl games, he threw two in less than five plays on Sunday night.
While Mahomes scored three touchdowns and 257 passing yards overall, it was too late in the second half to recover from the 34-0 score.
“I’ve been watching the Chiefs for a while and honestly, I think he was just having a bad night. It’s unfortunate he played like that at the Super Bowl, but he is still a strong player,” said Tori Parsons, a senior and fan of the Chiefs.
After months of being considered one of the most valuable players on the Chiefs, this night did damage to his career. Shortly after, Mahomes posted on the social media platform X saying, “I let y’all down today. I’ll always continue to work and try and learn and be better for it.”
“I feel kind of bad, I don’t think people should make fun of him but it definitely did hurt the game when he did his first turnover,” said Ashley Kibicho, a senior and football fan. The turnover she is referring to was the first turnover Mahomes made that led right to the Eagles scoring a touchdown.
While Mahomes fumbled, he is still early on in his career and has many opportunities to bounce back from it. The Super Bowl is the biggest event in football and can lead to immense pressure for the players.
