The LRHS wake up and read book drive

Leesville’s Book Club is hosting a book drive to benefit the WAKE Up and Read organization. This is an organization that puts books into the hands of elementary and middle school students.

Wake up and Read is an organization that supports K-8 schools all over WCPSS. “People should donate because it gives younger students new books, and allows them to read things that they haven’t before,” said Savannah Bouleris, junior. Wake Up and Read provides students with the opportunity to discover new genres, topics, and authors that they didn’t have access to before.

The book drive lasts between February 10-28, 2025 and accepts mildly used or new books. Books can be dropped in the collection boxes found in the media center.

If students are unable to donate, there are other ways for them to contribute. “You can sign up for a 2 hour slot to help Wake Up and Read organize and sort the books,” said Heather Fields, Librarian and Book Club Advisor. Volunteering can get you service hours and helps Wake Up and Read make quicker progress in getting books sorted and out to schools in need.

Since Wake Up and Read is a non-profit, they rely on volunteers, donations, and advertising. Spreading the word about how, and where to donate books could make a world of difference, even if it’s just to a few people.

Almost everyone has old books lying around that they haven’t read or just don’t care for. Instead of throwing these books away, give someone else the chance to love and appreciate them through the Wake Up and Read Foundation.
