On February 14th, people around the country celebrate Valentine’s Day. However, over the past several years Galentines has become a more and more popular alternative to the holiday.
“Galentine’s is when you hang out with your girlfriends and celebrate [Valentine’s day] with them because it’s more fun,” said Mia Vernon, sophomore.
Galentine’s Day has been associated to a similar history as Valentine’s Day but has also been linked to several different histories.
It was originally celebrated in the 15th century with the belief that birds choose their mates on St. Valentine’s Day. The name Galentine’s Day was given when men would write love letters, or “amorous addresses” to their lady of love.
More recently, Galentine’s Day was introduced in a 2010 episode of the popular show Parks and Recreation.
“[Galentine’s Day] means a lot to me. Iit’s a way to show how I love my best friends so much, and that I am so grateful to have them in my life, and that they support and love me,” said Zoe Rowlette, junior.
Galentine’s Day does not have a specific date, different Galentine’s Day events are hosted throughout the month of February, typically surrounding Valentine’s Day.
There are many different activities participated in for Galentine’s Day, including business-hosted events, meals, and fun activities.
“For Galentine’s Day, I am hosting a party at my house. We’re gonna eat and do fun things like crafts and painting,” said Rowlette.
Over time, the idea of Galentine’s Day has morphed from men writing love letters to girls spending time with their girlfriends. This holiday has taken on a whole different meaning, filled with friends, crafts, and love.
