Meta is the parent company of Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. The workers at Meta have been considering separating Instagram Reels, a section of Instagram made for short-form videos, from the app itself.
“I love Instagram Reels. I use it everyday. I’m on Instagram Reels all the time,” said Alexis Cook, senior.
Instagram users have complained about its clutterness – videos have become the most featured form of content, straying away from the original, photo-oriented purpose of the app.
“I think it’s a little cluttered,” said Brooke Mauro, freshman.
After the massive growth in popularity, short-form content has taken over a lot of social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and, of course, TikTok, which made short videos popular.
“I use Instagram the most just because I don’t have TikTok, but also I just like the content. There’s a good variety of funny stuff and recipes and workouts,” said Mauro.
With all these apps available, the question arises: is a separate app for Instagram Reels really necessary?
“I think it should stay the same because it made it what it is right now – a better app,” said Bryan Morales, senior.
“I guess it’s cluttered, but I feel like it’s easier to have [everything] together, because then you don’t have to go into another app just to watch Instagram reels. It seems stupid, and it would be better if everything stayed together,” said Cook.
In my opinion, Instagram and Instagram Reels should not be separated, as it is really convenient to switch between looking at regular posts and just scrolling through reels within the same app.
