Wake County has a phone policy designed to limit distractions and keep students focused. With the policy, teachers can tell students to put their phones away during class; if they refuse, the student can face disciplinary action. The goal is to help students stay engaged in class.
Some students dislike the policy. ” I feel like we should have more freedom, especially when we finish our work early. If I’ve done everything I need to, why shouldn’t I be able to check my phone for a second? It’s not like I’m bothering anyone,” said Camden King, sophomore.
“I don’t think it’s fair. Some teachers let us use our phones when we’re done with work, and others don’t. It feels inconsistent, and that makes it frustrating,” said Gabe Shaffer, junior.
Teachers have shared their thoughts on the policy. ¨I feel like if implemented correctly, the cell phone policy is well written and could be beneficial to students’ learning. However, there is not a good way really enforce it besides continuously telling students to put their phones away,¨ said Ms. Bowles, staff.
“I think that if students are left on their devices to scroll mindlessly and ignore what we are doing, it becomes a problem. As adults and teachers in the building, we need to help students refocus by taking their phones, if necessary,” said Ms. Hardy.
Leesville Road High School hopes this policy will improve the learning environment. Students are encouraged to follow the rules and use their phones responsibly when allowed.
