For many juniors and seniors at Leesville Road High School, off-campus pass is one of the best parts of school. It gives students the freedom to leave school during lunch.
The pass gives students more food options, a break from school, and a chance to be more independent.
¨I love having an off-campus pass because it makes lunch so much better,Instead of being stuck with the same cafeteria food every day, I can go out and grab something I actually want. Plus, it´s nice to step away from school for a little while and get some fresh air. It helps break up the long school day,¨ said Georgia Lilley, senior.
“I use my off-campus pass almost every day. It’s nice to take a break and clear my mind before heading back to class. Sometimes I go out with friends, and other times I just grab food and eat in my car while listening to music. It makes the day go by faster, and I feel more relaxed when I come back,” said Ethan Bonavita, senior.
Most students go to fast-food places, coffee shops, or even home.
“I usually go to Bojangles because they have good food, and I can get in and out quickly, but some days, I just go home and eat there. It’s nice to have some quiet time before going back to school. I think having this pass makes us feel more like adults because we have to be responsible for getting back on time,” said Genesis Mejia, junior.
To keep their off-campus pass, students need to be passing all their classes, limited missed days, and no discipline issues. Some teachers worry that students will take advantage of it.
“I’ve definitely heard of some people coming back late because they lost track of time,” said Mejia. “That’s why I always set an alarm on my phone. If you’re not responsible, you could lose your pass.”
Even with the risks, students say the pass is worth it. “It teaches us how to manage our time and be responsible,” Bonavita said. “If you can handle it, you should get to keep it. I think it’s a privilege, and I hope the school continues to offer it.”
Overall, the off-campus pass is a valuable privilege that gives students more freedom while teaching them responsibility. While some may take advantage of it, most students see it as an opportunity to manage their time wisely and enjoy a break from the school day.
