Should sophomores be allowed to go off campus for lunch?

At Leesville Road high school, juniors and seniors are able to leave the school during their lunch period, if they have a pass. The rule at our school is that sophomores and freshmen are not allowed to get an off campus pass.

The driving age in North Carolina is 16. When a student is in their sophomore year, they are 15, turning 16. This means a lot of sophomores have their license and buy parking spots at Leesville.

Students argue that if they are able to drive to school, they should be allowed to drive off campus for lunch.

Jack Stern, sophomore, said, “I think the rule that sophomores can’t go off doesn’t make sense. If we are able to drive to school, we should be able to leave school during lunch.”

Some upperclassmen argue that sophomores haven’t had as much driving experience as upperclassmen, so allowing them to go off campus increases possible danger and chaos on the roads.

“Sophomores are new at driving. They don’t have as much experience… If they all were allowed to leave at lunch, it could possibly lead to more accidents occurring and just increasing all risks driving,” said Katy Neligon, senior.

Students oppose the argument, stating that if they pass their license test and the government trusts them to drive on the roads, schools should also trust them and allow them to leave during lunch.

Sydney Champion, sophomore, said, “If we are capable of passing a driving test, the school should trust our driving abilities and let us leave during lunch like the upperclassmen.”
