The University of North Carolina Tar Heels baseball team has kicked off the 2025 season with an impressive start, showcasing their determination to build upon last year’s success.
After reaching the College World Series in 2024, the Tar Heels have begun this season with a perfect 12-0 record, demonstrating their prowess on the field.
Ranked No. 4 nationally, UNC’s early-season performance includes a historic three-game sweep against in-state rival East Carolina University (ECU).
“UNC performed well, especially on defense. The pitchers played lights out, and I only remember seeing maybe four or five ECU batters get a hit off the UNC pitchers,” typed Milo Wegmann via Instagram direct messages, a senior, and an attendee of the UNC vs ECU game at DBAP.
This sweep not only extended their unbeaten streak but also marked the first time in program history that the Tar Heels have swept ECU in a three-game series.
The series concluded with a 6-3 victory at Clark-LeClair Stadium, solidifying UNC’s dominance and improving their all-time series lead to 35-14 over the Pirates.
Several key players have been instrumental in the Tar Heels’ hot start.
Sophomore catcher Luke Stevenson has been a standout, contributing significantly to the team’s offensive and defensive efforts.
“His framing is next to none so as far as being new to college baseball he looks like a top catcher. I’ve never really seen him mess up on defense and he has a great eye when batting, often getting a lot of walks,” said Avery Morton, a senior, and a pitcher for the LRHS Baseball team.
Cameron Padgett, junior pitcher, has also made a notable impact, delivering crucial strikeouts in tight situations, such as during the midweek game against Kansas State.
Offensively, the team has displayed a balanced attack. Outfielder Kane Kepley leads the team with a .567 OBP, while infielder Hunter Stokely boasts a .509 OBP with four home runs and 17 RBIs.
The lineup’s depth ensures that opposing pitchers face challenges throughout the order.
On the mound, the Tar Heels’ pitching staff has been formidable, holding opponents to a .196 batting average over the first seven games. The combination of experienced starters and reliable relievers has been key to limiting runs and securing victories.
“We faced Walker McDuffie and he threw like 90 [MPH] in high school and now throws 97 [MPH] for UNC. He is a key reason why they’re number four now because of his elite skill. The entire bullpen is very solid,” said Morton.
Scott Forbes, head coach and in his fifth season, has emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and building upon each game’s success. Under his leadership, the team has developed a culture of resilience and determination, aiming to surpass last season’s achievements.
Looking ahead, the Tar Heels face a challenging schedule that includes matchups against top-ranked ACC opponents.
Notable upcoming series include home games against Duke and Wake Forest, as well as a season-ending series on the road against Florida State. These games will test the team’s mettle and provide opportunities to solidify their standing among the nation’s elite.
The early success of the 2025 season has ignited excitement among the UNC fan base.
As the Tar Heels continue to demonstrate their talent and determination, expectations are high for a deep postseason run.
With a blend of seasoned veterans and emerging stars, the team is poised to make a significant impact in college baseball this year.
