At Leesville, about 50% of the students identify as female, and makeup is a big topic of interest, from mascara to a full-face look.
Makeup has been around for thousands of years, influencing people, culture, and trends throughout history. Its use has evolved from ancient rituals to modern fashion, reflecting changes in beauty standards and societal values.
Makeup can significantly impact confidence and help complete the perfect outfit. Over the years, two major competitors have dominated the makeup industry: Sephora and Ulta Beauty. These two beauty brands have shaped trends and have influenced how people shop for cosmetics for many years.
Sephora offers more high-end brands and products. “Sephora is my favorite. I get everything from there,” said Daisy Torres Nunes, junior.
On the other hand, Ulta Beauty offers more well-known, affordable brands and products.
Many popular makeup brands today are tied to influential celebrities, making people more likely to try and buy their products.
“Rare Beauty is definitely my favorite makeup brand. My favorite products are the lip liners and the blush,” said Grace Trabulsi, sophomore. Brands like Rare Beauty, which are celebrity-owned and founded, are just some of the many popular brands Leesville students use.
A common stigma around girls wearing makeup is the assumption that they are insecure, seeking attention, or trying to hide their natural appearance rather than expressing themselves or enjoying the creativity of it. Despite the stigma surrounding makeup, it is not used to disguise how a person looks. Many people use makeup to try something new, have fun, and express their creativity. It can be a new opportunity to explore a form of self-expression and see what can be done with what products they have. “I think wearing makeup helps people build their confidence and make them feel good,” said Trabulsi.
At school, everyone expresses their individuality through different styles, whether through clothing, hairstyles, or makeup.
“For me, I like to do my makeup so much and I do it every day. It’s a part of my outfit,” said Maria Rodriguez Kelecic, senior.
Makeup is more than glitter and bright colors, it can also be an amazing form of self-expression that allows students to feel confident and creative.
“I wear makeup because it makes me feel put together. It helps me feel better about myself,” said Torres.
Overall, makeup plays an important role in many students’ daily lives; It can help someone step out of their comfort zone, boost their confidence, or complete the perfect outfit. Makeup remains a popular part of self-expression at Leesville.
