Leesville’s PTSA held its first College Planning Night and College Fair on Tuesday, January 26, evening in the auditorium. The event featured three guest speakers who discussed ACT/SAT testing, applying and financial aid.
After hearing from the speakers, parents and students met representatives from over forty universities, colleges and career organizations.
Sheba Brown, the first speaker, made quite an impression on the audience while speaking quickly and militantly to the audience. Brown discussed the importance of high test scores while applying to college. She advised students to “take advantage of what Leesville is giving you” in order to achieve academic goals.
Brown works for A PLUS Test Prep, an ACT/SAT tutoring center, to assist students in mastering pre-college testing. She is offering a February class at Leesville. For more information, visit the A PLUS Test Prep website.
Miles and Letha Costin, a married team and regional directors for the American College Planning Foundation (ACPF), talked numbers to the audience. The couple’s main goal was to stress the importance of choosing the college that will fit the student best, considering four categories: academically, financially, stylistically and environmentally.
The Costins offer workshops in Raleigh to assist families in determining the best college for their money.
Once the speakers concluded, parents and students were able to explore the College Fair which was set up in the cafeteria. Some well-renowned schools, such as Duke University and Vanderbilt, were present, as were representatives from each of the US Military branches. The College Fair also featured organizations such as the Aveda Institute and ECPI University for students who are interested in career-based learning.
