LRHS Liaisons help new students

The Leesville Student Liaisons program is designed to help new students adjust to the routines and atmosphere of LRHS. Ms. Lyons, the current supervisor, began her second year at LRHS by taking on the task of running the Student Liaison program, taking the place of Mrs. Roberts.

As a counselor, Ms. Lyons had heard first-hand stories of the difficulties of being a high-school student and starting at a new school. This encouraged her to maintain the Liaisons program. “We realized that we didn’t really have anything in place to help new students who started after the first week of school, (there are a lot of them!) So this year we started the Leesville Liaisons [program].”

The program offers many comforts to new students to help them adjust to a new school. For the first week of the school year, new students can eat lunch with liaisons as a way of learning the ins and outs of Leesville. School tours, lead by the liaisons, are also available to new students during first and second period.

Ms. Lyons intends to expand the program for the ’10-’11 school year by making the group of Liaisons more tight-knit. “I want to do more team-building among the liaisons, so they all get to know each other as well.” said Lyons.

Lyons also hopes to introduce new ideas such as monthly events, a biweekly lunch get-together, and organizing a club fair. The liaisons will also begin to accompany new students to after school events like chorus and band concerts, school plays, and sporting events.

The program aims to make the transition from one high school to another an easier process for new Loonies.
