On Saturday, January 28, the Leesville girls won the Cap-8 Swimming Championship for the fifth consecutive year. The girls’ team earned a total of 661.5 points, with Enloe coming in second with only 387 points.
The swim meet took place at Triangle Aquatic Center (TAC) in Cary. The swimmers began to arrive at 11:00 in the morning and started warming up around 12:00. The swim meet officially began at 1:00 with the girls 200 medley relay. Leesville Girl’s A relay and B relay got first and third in the event, respectively.
So far, the girls team has reigned undefeated. “It’s super cool, it’s super fun to see all of the girls who’ve come so far [and] being part of a team that has had so much success in the past couple years,” said Abby Toburen, a Leesville senior and one of the swim team captains. She heads the swim team alongside Jessica Moss, David Ierston-Brown, and Jacob Phillips.
The sentiment is shared by her other teammates as well. “[The meet] was very exciting and I’m glad I got to do it with the group of girls that we just swam with. They’re all amazing and they’re such great teammates,” said Ashley Brodnick, a junior on the team.
The Leesville girls five year reign as Cap-8 champions will come to an end soon, however. Starting next year, the current Cap-8 will be dissolved and the Wake County high schools will be redistributed to new conferences. Currently, Leesville is in a conference with Broughton, Heritage, Wakefield, Wake Forest, Enloe, Millbrook, and Sanderson. Wakefield, Heritage, and Wake Forest are being replaced by Cardinal Gibbons, a private Catholic school in Raleigh, and Southeast Raleigh. Leesville will be a part of the new Conference B until 2021.
Leesville’s swimming and diving went to Regionals the following Saturday, February 4 , where the girls swimming and diving kept their winning streak.
