Prior to spring break, the Pride women’s soccer team suffered two back-to-back losses causing them to drop to third in the conference. Both Wakefield and Millbrook defeated the Pride 2-1, leaving the Pride devastated going into spring break.
On Monday April 17, the Pride looked to bounce back against the Heritage Huskies.
The Pride didn’t focus on the losses however; they used the week break to recharge and prepare to but away Heritage which trails behind Leesville at fourth in the conference.
According to Brooke Sroka, a junior on the team, the Pride knew they had to be extremely focused in order to end the losing streak. “We knew going into the game that we were going to have to play tough. Away games are hard to win regardless, and it was the day after spring break which made it harder,” said Sroka.
The weather also made the game one of grit and determination. Mid-way through warm-ups, the dark clouds that had been looming over the field finally broke. A steady, heavy rainfall persisted throughout the rest of warm-ups and the entire first half. This made the field slippery and difficult to control the ball.
The Pride came out in the first half with a desire to win and a regained sense of confidence. They dominated possession which earned them their first goal in the first five minutes. Rachel Golden, senior, headed the ball into the net off a corner from Hannah Aerostegui, sophomore. The Pride continued to play strong defense, giving the Huskies no shots on goal.
The Pride earned their second goal in the last ten minutes of the first half. Anne Marie Cawley took the ball down the sideline on a breakaway and was fouled right inside the box. Aerostegui took the penalty kick for the Pride and tucked it away in the corner.
Going into the second half the Pride were up 2-0.
The second half was much less eventful for the Pride as they continued to possess the ball the entire half, not allowing the Huskies many opportunities on goal. With 39 seconds on the clock, Bella Soltz, sophomore, tucked one away in order to truly put the game away.
