The LRHS Political Club is hosting a Voter Registration drive during the week of September 20-24. The booth is set up in the courtyard between the Main Building and the East Building before school from 6:45-7:18 a.m. and after school until 2:45 p.m.
The registration booth is a long-standing tradition at Leesville and is especially popular with seniors.
“We chose to put the booth near the parking lot because we wanted to target seniors, and some juniors, that are potentially of voting age,” said Eli Kratt, president of Political Club. “We hope that the eighteen year olds will take the opportunity to vote and be politically active in our government from a young age.”
In order to qualify for registration in North Carolina, the future voter must be a U.S. citizen, have been a resident of North Carolina and Wake county for thirty days before the election, and be at least eighteen years old by the next general election. Voters also may not be registered to vote in any other county or state, and have had his or her rights of citizens restored after being convicted of a felony.
Seventeen-year-olds are eligible to pre-register to vote if they will be eighteen by the next general election on November 11, 2011.
The deadline to register to vote in North Carolina is twenty-five days before the day of the election. Those who miss the registration deadline may register in person then vote at a one-stop voting site during the one-stop absentee voting period.
Students who are unable to stop by the booth may print out their own form and mail it to Wake County Board of Elections, P.O. Box 695, Raleigh, NC 27602. If potential voters are unsure of their voter registration status, they can view the status here.
