Bohemian Rhapsody Review

Bohemian Rhapsody is the biopic and blockbuster hit about the life of Freddie Mercury and the legendary rock band Queen.

Emmy award-winner Rami Malek plays Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of Queen. Malek stars along with Gwilym Lee, Joseph Mazzello, and Ben Hardy; these three play lead guitarist Brian May, bass guitarist John Deacon, and drummer Roger Taylor. The film begins with Mercury working in London at the Heathrow Airport and attending Ealing Art College. Shortly thereafter, Freddie Mercury discovers the band Smile at a club and joins the band after their lead singer quits, the band eventually becomes Queen.

Freddie Mercury and Queen proceed to record many albums and go on tours in the UK, US, and worldwide. After great success and fame, Freddie Mercury finds himself in crossroads with his life and sexuality. Mary Austin, Mercury’s longtime girlfriend, breaks up with him after coming out to her as bisexual. Mercury is devastated and struggles without her in his life.

After finding himself through time away from the band, Mercury reunites with Queen and now best friend Mary Austin. Queen goes on to perform at the legendary Live Aid concert in Wembley Stadium to benefit Ethiopian Famine in 1985.

Bohemian Rhapsody was released on November 2 in the U.S. and worldwide. The film grossed around $150 Million worldwide in the five days after the release. Although the movie  had box office success, it received mediocre reviews from Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic scoring 60% and 49% respectively.

Despite these critiques, lead Rami Malek had a consensus of praise. “Emmy winner Rami Malek gives a smashing performance that should skyrocket him into the Oscar conversation. He and the film thrive when the volume is turned up and the microphones are on,” said review site everymoviehasalesson.com.

While the critics weren’t raving over this movie, I thought it was a great film and a must see. Bohemian Rhapsody tells a great story about the rock icon Freddie Mercury along with his band Queen. The movie features many of their biggest hits all throughout that are recognizable to so many. Songs like “We Will Rock You,” “Another One Bites The Dust,” and “We Are The Champions” capture viewers.

The story about Freddie Mercury’s hardships and trials in his life is a great one. He is racially discriminated against and has to conceal his sexuality to others. His struggles that lead him to create amazing music and impact so many others is something you must go see for yourself.
